I've always been of the opinion that you can have lots of public assistance with healthcare, housing, etc without needing to call it 'socialism'. Something is only socialist if your goal is to make the government's involvement in that something the overwhelming presence in private life.
Having a government military, for example, is a core national value, but it doesn't make us socialist. It's just a reality that the government has legitimate functions that complement private life.
This is really just a long explanation of why I can't stand people who call themselves socialists or claim to dabble in socialism without really knowing what it means...
