What does the 'social' in social Democrat mean?

typically in means stuff like socialized healthcare, social housing, a ubi, elements of socialism while keeping free market capitlaism.

I've always been of the opinion that you can have lots of public assistance with healthcare, housing, etc without needing to call it 'socialism'. Something is only socialist if your goal is to make the government's involvement in that something the overwhelming presence in private life.

Having a government military, for example, is a core national value, but it doesn't make us socialist. It's just a reality that the government has legitimate functions that complement private life.

This is really just a long explanation of why I can't stand people who call themselves socialists or claim to dabble in socialism without really knowing what it means...

I don't trust them because I sincerely doubt they have the temperance to implement programs without trying to take said programs in a direction that is actually socialist. Both, though especially AOC, are very much 'big government' folks. AOC at times seems downright hostile to the private market entirely.

well, aoc is less of a social democrat than bernie. a good example of social democracy is in the nordic countries.
