The point of having a large and updated nuclear arsenal is that you should NEVER have to use one 99.99999% of the time.

Yes, but many almost were. We won't always have a Vasili Arkhipov to save us. There have been many times where only a single person has stood in the way, and we've been incredibly lucky to have them. Do you want another Cuban missile crisis? It's called crisis, not Cuban missile slightly unfriendly conversation.

Hey I'm not a doomer. If I could end nuclear proliferation I would. So how about this: Convince China, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, and France to denuclearize. Once you do that, we'll have no need for our own arsenal and can dismantle it.

If there's one thing no country is immune to, it's pressure. For the US, France, and the UK, that means pressure from the populace to dismantle their nuclear arsenal, but for the...less democratic nations, it means pressure from other nations. Leaving them out of international events like the Olympics. Boycotting their goods. If it worked for ending apartheid in South Africa, it can work, as long as it is applied in a way that isn't aggressive.

If you think the world is a safe enough place to where the West can dismantle its nukes and expect the rest to follow suit you're tragically naive. I'm not trying to be mean, but the reality is that we need to have them so we never have to use them.
