In 1997, when 3d gaming technology was first invented by the one and only Nintendo (they are responsible for alot of things we take for granted like a standardised controller layout and the invention of 3d game rendering) they were making the absolute masterpiece called "mario 64" and Shigeru Miamoto struck gold on what makes a fun game, an open world with lots of movement, it was amazing (I know that I managed to get my hands on a copy) but it didn't scream mario so they moved onto mario sunshine (another masterpiece) and once again they struck (alot of) gold. An open world hub but something much, much greater. Having greater mobility locked behind something (in sunshine that would be flud) that can be taken away at any moment to get that classic mario gameplay, it was once again amazing but it still wasn't the perfect mario moment, so, onto the wii with mario galaxy (as expected, it's amazing) they have alot less movement and the thing I mentioned earlier where the movement is locked behind something.
(Which is now a luma) is put on a cool down instead of being taken away. Once again, a great game but it lost the charm of an open world experience. Mario 3d land and world were good games but seem to be more like a 2d game but got lost and became 3d. Now for mario odyssey (the best mario game in my opinion) they were thisclose to getting it perfect but just missed it. The magical movement object (now as cappy) gave such a wide range of movement and every world would be like it's own hub to it's own different levels which could be:
Timed (and no cappy)
Capture based
Cappyless.
They had almost found the perfect balance but barely failed. Now for browsers fury (not my favorite but still a great game) and this is it. They did it. The perfect mario 3d experience, what if they took the elements of the original 2d mario games and put it in an open world with the movement of super mario 3d world, it would be experimental but might work, and it did, it made the perfect mario 3d experience, the magical movement item
(Now as bowser jr) didn't effect movement and was optional but it could impact gameplay. They had done it, solved a mystery as old as 1997.
