India was under british control at the time.  21 Sikh soldiers in the 36th Sikh Regiment vs 10,000 Afghans (back then India was bigger under British Control). You would think that the 10,000 Afghans one with ease. But that wasn't the case. The Sikhs fought valiantly. Not a single one gave up. All the Sikhs were martyred. The Afghans did win, but only after hundreds and hundreds were slain.
