Just curious; what would prevent Biden from sending a hospital ship to Mobile?

I don't know. I am not Biden.

I do know that Trump would say something to the effect of "I don't want to help a state that doesn't help themselves."

>>Here's the original quote:

Thursday, August 20, 2020

SCRANTON, Pa. (KGO) -- During his remarks in Pennsylvania Thursday, President Donald Trump addressed the California wildfires, which have burned hundreds of thousands of acres statewide.

"And I see again, the forest fires are starting," Trump said. "They're starting again in California. And I said, you've got to clean your floors. You've got to clean your floors."

The president blamed the "years" of leaves and broken trees, claiming "they're like, like so flammable."

During his speech in Scranton, Pa., Trump said, "I've been telling them this now for three years, but they don't want to listen," referencing California.

"Maybe we're just going to have to make them pay for it, because they don't listen to us. We say you got to get rid of the leaves," Trump said.

Probably has something to do with Republicans/conservatives don't want help from big government. They're all about small government... Like the confederate states were....

So Republicans want to secede? Seems to be the conclusion of your tirade for which I did not at all ask.

Trump sent a hospital ship to New York City when it experienced a COVID crisis. What exactly is stopping Biden from doing that to Alabama?

That's a strawman argument. That's not what I said.

You're also making a false equivolency here. When Trump sent a hospital ship, it was when there wasn't a vaccine. So.. Perhaps, the question should be, "Why should Biden send a hospital ship? People have all the tools they need there to fix the problem. Get vaccinated." From a conservative standpoint, to send in a hospital ship to people who won't help themselves or even make the attempt, that would be a waste of money. It's not like you can have a hospital ship cover all of the non-COVID ICU needs because it won't cover the whole state. The only purpose a Hospital ship would serve is as you mentioned, aid to states afflicted with an outbreak. Why send a ship to save another ship that will just pull it under?

If it was any fallacy at all it'd have been a non sequitur, not a strawman. However, you raised the comparison and I fail to see any other commonality specific to the Confederacy other than secession.

Not false equivalency at all, in fact. From Biden's view it's simple and obvious; There is a public health crisis in Alabama. He can send a ship to Mobile entirely on his own authority. Not only is it sensible from a leadership perspective (he gets to help those who need it), but it is a political golden egg. Alabama's governor can't decline help without losing major political clout. Biden would be seen as the leader willing to cross partisan lines and extend the hand of help even if it was formerly rejected. Turn the other cheek, remember.

Fair enough, and to answer your question more directly. There are Republicans who want to Secede. I think I recall seeing a secession initiative in Texas but obviously got no where. But that's not what I was saying with that statement. I was saying that these Republicans advocate for small government in politics today as they did back before the civil war. These are the same states that rebelled. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

It is a false equivalency as there wasn't a vaccine when Trump sent the ship in. I've been watching the Republican party long enough to realize that this "golden egg" opportunity is more like a water-balloon. Republicans wouldn't care, they wouldn't just suddenly shift their views and think he may not be so bad. They'd be in the ship watching Fox News saying how bad of a President he is. Or "He's just doing that to save face." I've heard it all before.

As far as I am concerned? I can't know what is going through Biden's mind. So I honestly can't answer why or why not he hasn't sent in a ship. It's not like I have him on speed dial.

Sure, and there are Democrats who want to turn us into Belarus. So it's not like the crazy is limited to one side of the aisle.

Secessionist sentiment? A conservative, not Republican, sentiment. The Republicans were the driving force behind the abolition and pro-Union movements before the Civil War. The Great Fringe Switch didn't occur until LBJ in the 60's.

It doesn't matter whether a vaccine available nor am I asking you to get into Biden's head; I've laid out why it would be a fantastic move on his part that would in all likelihood greatly alleviate the crisis (your motivator for talking about this in the first place) and would score him major political points no matter how Alabama actually responded.

Besides, just because outsiders decree a good deed doesn't take away from that good. If the people on the ground in Alabama truly need help then they'll be grateful to get it. If not, well, then I don't see what their definition of a crisis is...

That's just it, they aren't calling it a crisis, I don't think. I think they're still trying to ignore it.

Then we just sit by and wait for the situation to change. It sucks, but that's the right call.
