So in 1931 the International Olympic Committee gave the 11th Modern Olympics to Berlin, Weimar Republic. The Weimar Republic hoped the games would show the new era for Germany after WW1, like Tokyo 1964 would later do for Japan. However, in 1933, Hitler seized power, and many people wanted the IOC to move the Games elsewhere, but they refused to do so. Hitler attended and opened the Games, and many countries did the Nazi salute during the opening ceremony. This was the first Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame from Olympia, Greece, to the stadium in Berlin via a relay of runners, a tradition that continues to today.
