I like to to exploring to find a structure to raid. You can also build a shoe box made of wood and go mining to get resources. After about a day you should have iron armor. Just go look at the wiki

all i do is just find a village on day 1.
And im like, I cant do this when i go into caves

Then go strip mining, it might be harder to find resources, but it still gives you them

what makes me hesitate from that is mining out lava.

Just block it before it can hurt you. Also get good
