My take, as a Catholic, is that our immigration system is f****d up (has been for decades) and needs a SERIOUS overhaul. We need to make it easier to immigrate legally, while sealing out illegal immigrants so as to ensure we're not slapping those taking the legal route in the face, but ALSO properly manage asylum-seekers so we're not turning away anyone who truly needs immediate help.
I'm coming at this from the perspective of fair play; those who want to enter the country legally deserve to do so in a manner more efficient and easy than those who would try illegally. Asylum-seekers can be put in safe conditions and then onto a track to legally undergo the same process that other legal immigrants follow. This current situation where it's faster and cheaper, largely, to enter illegally than legally, is grossly unfair. I want to rectify that unfairness, not preclude anyone out of malice. Seeking a fair system and ensuring everyone plays by the rules is wholly Christian and realistically a goal we'll never achieve....bleh...
