I really hate how minecarts can phase through blocks. But it was partially their fault.

Ya, but next time, grian will be successful, cuz he now knows how to use it, unless he use other type of rigging up

The reason it was able to clip was that 1. TNT counts as a 'transparent' block and 2. if a minecart is clipping, and you place a block next to it, it will still phase.
