Specifically a Democratic Republic. A Republic on it's own simply requires an elected leader. A Democratic one also means that other issues and parliaments are all voted on.
That is true, it was a compromise, with the House of Representatives being the only 'democratic' part of the Constitution, and the Senate being the non-democratic guard.
