Loose gravel is the thing that in minecraft you mine one block of gravel and all of the other gravel falls, but tight gravel is the one where you mine the gravel and no other blocks fall down (except for the gravel on top of it). It also works with sand. I hope this makes sense because I got lost halfway through writing this.
