McCarthy was not a leader of Republicans by any means but a Wisconsin senator who was concerned about communists in the USA to the point he became absurd & irrelevant in just a few years out of the 1950s. Democrats also fell under this spell.

I'm still confused by the "70 years" part - McCarthy has been dead for 58 years, and only served in the Senate for 10 years.

Nobody thinks about McCarthy. This is a weird meme. McCarthy wasn’t even an adult for 70 yrs let alone a leader. Tying him to 21st century Republicans is stretching that rubber band d beyond its elasticity.

I meant that it’s been 70 years since the red scare started and tons of conservatives are still scared of the word communism
