This isn’t horrifying, more like sad.
When watching Lilo and Stitch as a kid, I always thought of it as a fun action comedy. But as I grew older I realized that the story of Lilo is actually really sad.
Lilo’s parents died when they went for a drive on a stormy night and crashed, so now she feeds a fish Peanut butter sandwiches to control the weather... and then she gets shunned by all the girls her age, and when she tries to play dolls with them and they leave, she throws her doll on the ground and stomps away... but then she feels shamed by doing it and runs back to pick it up and hug it.
She gets into constant fights with her older sister, who at heart really does love her and doesn’t want her to be taken into custody by someone else. Lilo even admits that she likes Nani better as a sister than a mom, and she asks Nani if she likes her better as a sister than a rabbit, which pieces in to the fight they had earlier.
Lilo wishes for a friend who wouldn’t run away. She wanted someone who could be there for her... maybe an angel!
Nani listens in, and then gets Lilo a dog to try and help her.
Their social worker even said to Nani, “Is this what she needs?! It seems like you need her a lot more than she needs you!”
The only time I ever came close to crying in a movie was when Benji was getting hung by the neck in Mission Impossible Fallout, but rewatching this movie almost made me cry.
