Ryn LeMarke is a fourteen year old boy who lives in acacia county near yellowstone state park. His single mother is a cartoonist who pulls enough money to pay bills and buy food. Everyone else in his town is rich from tourism because of the town being close to yellowstone. All the youth loath Ryn except for his only human friend Mackenzie Clarke. The two have been friends since they started school. Ryn owns a great dane named Charlie who has been his friend for many years. When odd creatures start to appear Ryn notices a strange person wearing cosplay armor roaming in the photos and videos of the shadow creatures. When the town is attacked the person reveals that they are in fact hunting the creatures and the source of the creatures is a dormant volcano in yellowstone. Ryn, Mackenzie, Charlie, and their new found allie Aidan travel across the land to stop the problem at the source. They are attacked by nature and more creatures. When Mackenzie is injured they are caught off guard by a creature who is fought off by Charlie but at great cost. When Ryn notices odd behavior from Mackenzie they stop at an abandoned trading post where it is revealed by a different creature named Seer that MAckenzie is trying to betray Ryn. When Mackenzie tries and purposefully fails to kill Ryn he is thrown into rage and thinks he kills her so he moves on and teks Aidan with him. When they near the summit a man wearing the same armor as Aidan appears and tries to kill them. Mackenzie appears and tries to help defend them but Ryn has had enough. He recklessly fights the man even though Aidan yells at him to back off. Aidan then pushes Ryn away from the fight in time to be impaled by the man´s sword. As aidan dies he reveals that he is Ryn´s brother and that the man was their father. He tells how their Mother was killed by one of the creatures so their father killed the creature´s king and was then crowned as the new king but was possessed by a dark power known as the queen. Ryn renews his relationship with Mackenzie so they can defeat Ryn´s father. When they reach the top they are greeted by Ryn´s father, the demon king, and the Queen. They fight and Ryn loses lots of blood from a fatal wound. Mackenzie uses the seed of a fruit given to them by Aidan when he died to take his injury and cause her to take it. As Ryn uses new strength to defeat his Father Mackenzie collapses and has to resort to ranged fighting. When Ryn defeats his father he is no longer possessed by the Queen.
