"Klan" is an alteration of the Scottish Gaelic word "clan". Clan literally translated means children but is used more to mean family. For example if your surname is MacDonald or McDonald then you are from the MacDonald Clan.

Scottish clans in the 1500's to mid 1700's would burn a cross to signal unity and loyalty and if another clan or the English were about to attack. The last recorded use of the Scots burning a cross was at the 2nd Jacobite uprising in 1745. This was to rally the clan to fight the English at the Battle of Culloden in 1747.

I hear once that the KKK was originally formed to drive out the carpetbaggers who had come down from the North and was ripping off the people in the South. Apparently after they had accomplished that then some of them started to focus on persecuting the blacks. You'll have to look that up to verify it. I don't know because the only clan's I am interested in are from Scotland because that is where most of my ancestry comes from. Those clans have nothing whatsoever to do with the klan other than there must have been some people of Scottish ancestry in the original KKK for them to have taken the word clan and taken the cross burning from Scotland.

Of course you know all this because you are a loyal Democrat, just like those who created the KKK.
