Nope. You've got your history wrong. The War on Drugs was started by Nixon and escalated by Reagan. By the early 90s, the political climate was such that the majority of every demographic was clamoring for tougher drug control enforcement and increased jail time. Just to be clear, that not just white Americans, that's racial minorities as well. Even if someone had objections to this type of legislation, the environment was so toxic that it was political suicide to oppose it.

That is why we have the extreme and insane drug laws we have now...

Nope. The meme didn't. However, the issue of race has been embedded into the war on drugs since Nixon kicked it off, and it has had a devastating effect on African American communities in the US. Republicans often point out that it was Bill Clinton who signed the most egregious legislation into law as a way of driving a wedge between the African American community and Democrats - much like your meme seems to do. However, this overlooks what happened to bring about that legislation. The fact remains that it was the Republicans who were in control of the House of Representatives at the time the legislation passed. I'm just trying to give the full historical context.

If you don't believe me, there are plenty of articles out there that do a much better job explaining it than I do - but that's the gist of it.

Re: Cops under Obama? Are you kidding me? If I was a racist police officer and the first black man was elected president, how do you think I'm going to react?
