I think it also depends on the place where you're living whether people just go with the herd or not...

However, I think it happens everywhere more or less.

I cannot read the text in the balloon on the second panel, but I get your point... Well, in case of school, it might help sometimes to choose what everyone else chooses (not always, though). XD However, if you actually know the answer (instead of just following everyone), it's better. =P
