So palpatine had already went to exegle prior to return of the jedi and created a clone there. After vader pushed him down the reactor shaft he pushed his life force into the clone. The giant blue burst of lightning wasn't palpatine dying it was him using the force to put his life force in the clone. But doing so made it so that the clone still had less life force than palpatine did and so that is why he was put on that life support rod spike thing.

I have heard that theory before..and i'm kinda sceptical about it. Why are the hands all weird, and why is the clone dead? Also, isn't it REALLY hard to clone force sensitives?

The force power of infusing your life force into another being is called essence transfer by the way. I don't think that Force abilities are moved when essence transfer is done. Just your soul basically, the body doesn't change. It would be hard to clone palpatine BECAUSE he is force sensitive, so thats why im not so sure.

to be more clear, in essence transfer you move your CONSCIOUSNESS from one body to another, not force powers and whatnot.

According to Disney cannon: yeah palpatine is 'possessing' a clone. In reality, the writers of ROTS were backed into a corner by TLJ's lack of a villain and wrote a poor script.
