Can I do a rant on anime girls right here? I have nothing against the style of drawing, but I hate the way so many anime girls are portrayed because. . .well, I'll compare it against my current manga character, Kasria, and leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Firstly; the serious lack of girl power. Almost all the anime girls are little weaklings. Kasria sleeps with her sword by her side, and is unafraid to plunge into battle with the deadliest of monsters. Perhaps she's a little arrogant, but at least she doesn't scream or faint or collapse at the sight of danger.
Next, she is not overtly sexy. Almost all the girls in anime shows wear miniskirts that could double as headbands, day in and day out, and usually as part of their uniform. Seriously, what school requires girls to wear a uniform like THAT? If anything, uniforms are there to keep the students dressed modestly! Kasria spends her days in a typical military uniform a little too big for her, and she has several scratches and wounds.
Also, she does not have an annoying, high-pitched voice constantly punctuated by 'ehs' and 'ohs'. She talks like a normal human being. Well, she isn't one - she's a native of the western planet Emarl - but that's not the point. The point is that she speaks like me, like you, and like every other ordinary English-speaking Canadian in the country, and as such one can relate to her.
Plus, it is very unrealistic. Most anime girls are like little frightened rabbits, terrified of danger and ready to bow to the whim of whoever comes along. I mean, seriously? Girls don’t act like that. Unless they’re wimps or way too polite for their own good. Most people, especially in this day and age, stick up for themselves. I know that personally I would never, ever, ever stay in a relationship with someone who treats me like his own personal property upon which he can do whatever he wants. Look, ninety percent of girls do not act like this. Boys who read lots of manga and watch lots of anime are going to develop unrealistic expectations for women and feelings of entitlement that, as men, will not get them anywhere.
Anyway, that's my rant. Sorry if I've bored you to death or made you angry by talking about something I don't know much about, but I'm just so sick of seeing anime portrayed like this.
