No, you need 16 red hearts. The best way I found to do this was to just grind shrines until you get enough Spirit Orbs, and trade them all for heart vessels.
there is a glitch where if u put a fire right net to the sword and look up to the sky and sit at the fire until morning and spam a u will get the sword with any amount of hearts
