Although, the new design is admittedly cute, but I do miss the train models and the impressive complex sets they used in older show.

They probably change it due to money issues. A lot of recent shows tend to use cheaper methods in order to save cost and increase production for more episodes, especially with cartoons that use Flash animation for an example.
