Chimchar is the best starter and I made what they lost to specific not just "I lost to something!"

It seems that chimchar has a disadvantage against the first gym but if you evolve it, it becomes good agaist the gym

Where's your fire type then? At least with other gens you have other options that might not be better, but they're still there but in diamond and pearl you just have the chimchar line and ponyta witch can't evolve until level 40 and isn't fighting type

Piplup has an akward middle stage and so does turtwig but chimchar has 3 great designs

Choose chimchar in diamond and pearl and you can choose the other 2 in platinum because more fire types

well yes but actually no, Empoleon beats Infernape's Fire type

But infernape can learn close combat and has same type attack bonus on it

Empoleon is the best overall

I say chimchar is the best because you can evolve chimchar to destroy the first and second gyms while with piplup you might get one shotted yourself and turtwig doesn't gain an advantage against poison types until it is fully evolved with a 4 times weakness to ice in a snowy place
