That works on more than just visual tasks, I will leave to people alone in a room and then come back 30 seconds later to see if there is a dead body

that works. Try to stand close enough so the people in the room can't see you but you can see if the vent opens. You may not be able to see who's inside but you can see the vent opening and closing.
