It's a good thing we're a republic and not a democracy. He's done pretty good at building up and strengthening our republic. Who cares about democracies? They always fail.

Hold up.

Isn't democracy really important? Not to forget that the US, UK and plenty other countries aren't failing.

The UK is not a democracy either. They have a Parliamentary system that is somewhat similar to our Congress.

A pure democracy would mean that the entire citizenship would have to vote on every issue brought forward in the government. They don't work because a democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner. It is the tyranny of the majority. The majority could actually vote to take everything you own if that was the will of the majority. Our founding fathers knew this and that is why we are not a democracy.

What we are and have always been is a Constitutional Republic. We elect people who are supposed to represent us in government. They make laws on our behalf. The problem we have now is that ever since President Woodrow Wilson (one of the worse presidents we've ever had) changed the number of representatives from the constitutional number of 1 rep per 30,000 people we now have a limit capped at 435 reps. Back then the reason was because of the size of the Congressional Building could not accommodate any more than that. That severely decreased our representation in government. In addition our Reps have mostly all turned corrupt. They don't care about what the people from any party think, they are only interested in preserving their own power and their own jobs.

The solution is to abandon the Congressional Building. Go back to the Constitutional limits of 1 rep for every 30,000 people. Let the Reps stay in their district permanently and meet and vote virtually via the internet. That would go a very long way towards bring power back to the individual like how this country was set up. It would also make it harder for reps to be bought off by corporations and special interests because there would be just too many and they would be more visible to the people they represented.

Our system of government has been mislabeled a Democracy since the beginning. I have no idea why our founders sometimes referred to our nation as a Democracy when they all knew that Democracies always fail. Regardless we have, to a certain level, have been calling ourselves a Democracy from day one of this nation.

However, I think that Democracy has taken on a whole knew meaning when referred to by the Socialist left. Socialism is also the tyranny of the majority but it is different. Instead of the majority of the people voting against the minority, it is a small group of narrow minded imbeciles deciding (without the consent of the people) what is best for everyone. It is in effect the same as majority rule because there are always people whose needs will never be met because the central planners are just too stupid to know (or care about) the needs of the few or the one.

Ya see. The people choose. Not one person in power. This is a democracy. (shock, I know)

It is true that there is a democratic element to our type of government. We vote for representatives. There are propositions, initiatives and other items on only ballot that affect us at a local level that we vote on. But there are never as many of those issues as what the state and county legislators and city councils see. Those people also represent us. That is why it is important to get to know your local politicians to see if they are truly representing you.

However, we are not a pure democracy. The reason is that the people we elect to represent us can look at an issue and vote against the will of majority the people. It is because they can see that a particular issue will have a major impact on the minority and a minor impact on the majority. This is how the minority are protected from the majority.

This is how the sheep can override the vote of the two wolves on what to have for dinner.

There are still flaws in a Republic (like how our current representatives do not represent us) but all in all it is a vastly superior system of government than all others. It is why England and other European countries went to a parliamentary system.

No system devised by mankind is perfect but what we have is the best.

China calls itself a Republic also but it is not. Not even close. No one in the Chinese government represents the people. The people are subjects to an oppressive regime. They call themselves a Republic as a why of trying to sound like something better than they are. Communism is evil.

I don't think you get it. It's like the political compass. The US is a democracy, not an autocracy. The US is a Republic, not run by a monarch. Dead simple

I understand what you are saying. We are not an autocracy but democracy is not the only thing that is opposite of an autocracy.

A pure democracy is where every citizen votes on everything. We simply do not have the time or the inclination to vote on everything. It also creates a tyranny of the majority. This nation was simply founded on the principle that all political power resides in the individual. A pure democracy is when all political power resides in the majority.

I just cannot get more text book than that. We do not have a tyranny of the majority. We have a representative government where sometimes the majority is the tyrant and sometimes the minority is the tyrant.

Not a full democracy, but more democratic than autocratic, therefore a democracy

If that is what makes you happy then, yeah, we're a democracy but the name that fits the best is Republic or a Constitutional Republic.
