As a child, I was in Tennessee for a summer at my Uncles who married a daughter of the south.
My aunt was a typical southern hospitality type. Always feeding you and fussing over your needs
One requirement was I needed to go to a baptist Church every Sunday with the family, the hellfire and brimstone type.
She would have tea after church with the other church women. Lots of negative politics and racism.
Once, I confronted her about a particular brutal conversation she had over an African American girl working as a waitress in a restaurant.
When I stated “didn’t the church sermon this Sunday mention Jesus preached to love one another and that everyone is equal in the eyes of the lord?”
Or that, “perhaps she should use those teachings in her judgment on the waitress”?
That was the first and only time I saw my
“southern hospitality Aunt” actually lose her shit!
Claiming, as an outsider, I didn’t know anything about how things worked ‘down here’!
Needless to say, a long chastisement of my excepting “ignorance”
A lesson learned of my Aunts and her flocks superiority I will never forget.
