Ulysses S Grant was a strong Republican, the top general who fought the Democrat south. Also it wasn’t till after the 40’s that black people began voting blue and it’s because of the attractive welfare policies, not race. In fact, republicans voted in much higher percent approval than democrats of both the civil rights act and the 19th amendment.
