So which is it? The media eggs on and protects the rioters, or the media is calming down the rioters? You can't have both.

You really need to think longer before responding. The media does whatever best suits their agenda. Riots were nothing but beneficial for biden ONLY before the election. Arbitrarily calling the race for biden does many things:

1. It calms down any potential left wing rioters that may be getting impatient and have nothing better to do on the weekend.

2. It may make some Trump supporters give up hope, deterring them from protesting.

3. Most importantly, they learned their lesson well from 2000. Bush v. Gore lasted 32 days, and it was only 1 state! This time around, the challenge is going to be coming in probably 6 states. Declaring biden the victor can cast a shadow on the upcoming proceedings.

But riots sell papers. It raises ratings. It's big money for them.

You're the one not thinking this through. The media called it because in addition to everything else, they also want to be the first one to call the results correctly. Fox News ALWAYS tries to be the first, but they also remember what a disaster it was to call it wrong in 2000.

Ratings, profits, or anything else are secondary.

Now you know why you're not in charge of a media company. Without profits, nobody gets to implement ANYONE'S agenda.
