If you want a simple boy haircut, make it shorter than any girl hairstyle. Rigid and choppy looks are for guys, as to more wavy looks for girls. I recommend for you to try and recreate boy hair from popular animes (the more, the better!), then attempting to create your OWN hairstyle! Refer to my drawing if you want an example to what I mean.

Umm. Ok if you’re drawing something that goes sideways, make sure the bangs are kinda crossing over the forhead.
