The right needed another boogeyman to scare the daylights out of their followers that didn't come off as racist as his other boogeymen (Muslims, Latin immigrants). Democrats aren't trying to do half of the things Trump and outlets like the Epoch Times and Fox News are saying they are. But because there are so many Republicans getting turned off by Trump and his antics, they need to paint Democrats as something wholly un-American and untenable so that people would rather reluctantly stay on Trump's sinking ship than sell America down the river with Democrats. Just remember, we've already had 8 years of Democrats just recently and things were going so much better than they are now.
