Having the option to opt out sounds good on paper. However, there's the problem that everyone will just opt out when they're young, then opt back in right before retirement, which is unsustainable. For there to be an option to opt out but not collapse the system, the opt out has to be for life, no turning back. People like you can opt out and plan for retirement your own way while others like me will continue to pay in and get out what we get in retirement. However, you can't change your mind unless you pay what you owe. As for completely privatizing it, I oppose. The whole point of Social Security is that it's for the public as opposed to the private sector.

If you opt out then you can not opt back in. I am for this and to slowly phase out government control and make more programs run by private businesses. People make so much on their 401K and then also get SSI. There should be an income limit to get SSI for those who did not make much in their lifetime.

Yes, that would be a big problem, so you the option to opt-out would have to be permanent, or if you change your mind later, based on the actual payments you make into it.

Man I hate social security. But I've had some fairly good points brought to me about why some people really like it. So what if there were an option to choose whether or not you wanted it? Or even privatizing it like other insurance?
