Having the option to opt out sounds good on paper. However, there's the problem that everyone will just opt out when they're young, then opt back in right before retirement, which is unsustainable. For there to be an option to opt out but not collapse the system, the opt out has to be for life, no turning back. People like you can opt out and plan for retirement your own way while others like me will continue to pay in and get out what we get in retirement. However, you can't change your mind unless you pay what you owe. As for completely privatizing it, I oppose. The whole point of Social Security is that it's for the public as opposed to the private sector.
