Well if you want to help the small users, setting the default setting to New does that.

If there are people that only look in New if it's set to default, doesn't it help the smaller users to have New as the default?

When I'm only on here for a little I look at hot
I don't know about other people but I prefer to see the best memes when I don't have much time.
I think having the default sort as new could both help and hurt people and since I'm not good with words I can't really describe it.

If you really want to see the hot memes, just click the hot button. There are a lot of people here who wouldn't see the new memes unless it was the default setting. If you want to help the smaller users, why wouldn't you want the default setting to be "New"?
