IT WAS INTRODUCED IN JULY OF 1942, WHEN THE US NAVY WAS EAGER TO SUPPLEMENT THE F6F HELLCAT, BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL DECEMBER THAT THE VISIBILITY AND HANDLING ISSUES WERE RESOLVED AND THE CORSAIR WAS ADOPTED. IT FOUND A NICHE WITH THE US MARINES, PRIMARILY USED AS A BOMBER ESCORT AND FIGHTER-BOMBER TO REPLACE THE F4F WILDCAT. JAPANESE PILOTS QUICKLY CAME TO RESPECT THE CORSAIR AND ITS 11:1 KILL RATIO.
