What I think the essential difference is:
Conservatives want less government interfering in our lives because they trust the people to make their own decisions. The Left typically wants bigger government, because they don't trust ordinary people to come together to solve their own problems.
That's why saying fascism is of the Right is wrong. Conservatives want to be left alone and are willing to leave you alone.
