Sigh.
1. The confederate statues were never about “protecting history” but to glorify confederates and to intimidate black people. There’s a reasons spikes in construction were in the turn of the 20th century in the Jim Crow era and in the 1950’a to 1960’s during the civil rights movement. It’s as clear as a mirror what their intended purpose was. It’s a travesty that Black people today who literally lived through the civil rights era have to pay taxes and subsidize monuments who’s whole purpose was a giant middle finger to those blacks.
2. Even if it was about “protecting” history, I highly doubt anyone would learn history from taking a walk in the park and seeing a confederate statue. If you still unironically believe that once confederate statues are removed then no one will remember the civil war, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. Do you know where people do learn about the confederacy? In school. There’s a reason there’s no bin laden statues in New York or Hitler statues in Germany. WeLl iT’S tO pRoTeCt hIstOrY!!!!!! Give me a break.
3. The rest of your thread was just you posting statues that I don’t actually support being taken down. The fact that statues commemorating good people are taken down, does not make the movement to take down confederate statues any less valid.
4. With that all being said, while I do think confederate statues should go down, it’s pretty far down on the bucket list that America should improve on. Ultimately taking them down is a positive change, but a symbolic one.
