Here's a character that I think went through about as much pain as waluigi, the hollow knight from hollow knight. To quickly explain, he was a vessel that grew a bond with the pale king but was only made to seal a god inside of him which backfired and now he's infected and in his boss fight he stabs himself so he can end the pain. Yeah I know, pretty f*cked up.

So he basically wins the boss fight for you?

Well, basically. But you are still the one who takes them down in 2 of the 3 endings, so he helped you win the fight more than win it for you.
