If you listen to Kurt Cobain there is one thing that may eventually be observed. He was not writing rock and roll songs. He was writing small symphonies with modern rock musician instruments. In a way this may be an argument against how good he was at writing alternative music. Alternative was a return to punk roots. What he did returned to something else all together different.
