That would encourage people to create fake accounts. By displaying only the positive metric, the benefit to down voting is only personal points - you can't actually hurt anyone with them.

If you can't hurt anyone with them, and you can't see them, then what's the point in having them?

If you get enough downvotes it will say low rated comment click to show, so it could possibly hurt them that way by not getting as many upvotes

i wish imgflip hust added a downvote counter. so we can:

1.complain why we have downvotes
2.see how the meme that you have created/saw is bad

I would like that but then people would complain all the time they have so many downvotes, but it would make me happy to see people who are upvote begging
