it would take leaders dedicated to making that happen, and so a majority of citizens who value that. i think there is such a majority in America, but we need to decide to do it, as we've decided to take other positive steps in the past.

I think it is like deploying soldiers into the battlefield. Those who are attracted to the profession are a subset of the population. Most will come through the experience ok, but some will be changed by the experience. I don’t think we can predict that outcome in advance, or always recognize it until it is too late.
