Everybody who uses a debit or credit card has to touch them. I asked (quietly and politely) a cashier to clean one after a patron rubbed her nose and then pushed the buttons. Those shields could provide some minimal protection from coughs or sneezes, like those placed over buffets or salad bars, but I agree it's mostly theater … like face masks.
