“ok, sorry if this offends you, but as a kid who got a diamond sword in minecraft multiple times, this is killing me right now. any tool is better than leather, in fact leather isn’t even a type of tool. You can’t craft one into a pick axe, or a sword, not even a regular axe. So clearly the only thing worse than gold, is wooden tools.

Gold gets better enchantments than other tools, and, correct me if I'm wrong, can be carried over to your better tools if you don't enchant the gold tool.
