MITOSIS IS THE PROCESS IN WHICH A CELL REPODUCES BY SPLITTING INTO TWO IDENTICAL CELLS; IN THE FIRST PHASE, PROPHASE, CHROMOSOMES ARE FORMED. IN METAPHASE, THE CENTROSOMES MOVE TO THE OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE CELL AND GROW SPINDLES. THE CHROMOSOMES THEN ATTACH TO THE SPINDLES. IN ANAPHASE, THE CHROMOSOMES ARE SPLIT INTO TWO, EACH BEING USED TO FORM TWO NUCLEI. IN TELOPHASE, THE SPINDLES DISAPPEAR AND NEW MEMBRANES ARE FORMED OVER THE CHROMOSOMES. THE CHROMOSOMES THEN RELEASE TO FORM A FULL PACKAGE OF DNA, AFTER WHICH THE CELL MEMBRANE PINCHES INWARDS TO FORM TWO NEW, INDENTICAL CELLS.
