It's funny because a lot of countries in Europe have tons of multilingual folk.
In America [other people] visit other English speaking states, maybe a tourist location out of the states, but God forbid we learn another language.
In other countries people travel similar distances and go to somewhere with a different natural language, so they have a tendency to pick up those languages either in school or by visiting regularly.
So when someone goes to France and speaks Spanish, it's quite possible they could understand the gist of what someone is saying, even in the wrong language.
