Have you noticed that we don't have outbreaks of plague every summer anymore like we used to? It's because we all put in to pay someone to clean the streets of trash every day. So grow up!
Ed, I understand that, particularly in your country, it can seem like sitting back and paying taxes while your government spends it on awful projects that you do not want to endorse is just unacceptable - but, on something as simple as cleaning trash, you have a clearcut case of: every puts in, everybody benefits, and nobody dies of cholera every year.
You might not realize just how much innovation and engineering goes into sewege and public hygiene systems. Just to have running water everywhere is a monumental undertaking headed by the best and brightest engineering minds your society has to offer. There is no lack of imagination to it - that's your lack of knowledge talking. But - and I cannot stress this enough - no private company wants to do it. No individual wants to take on that work for themselves. It only happens when it gets paid for collectively through taxes. Every time someone has tried to abolish taxes and to run waste management any other way, people have died. And where's your "statism is rape and murder" when people are dying because YOU, Ed Fridovich, don't like taxes?
