Neovegans these days are actually omnivores who identify with anything that can give them moral high ground.
And, no it's not hypocritical to use the internet to discuss ideas which include classic veganism/ahimsa
No actual vegan ever tries to rationalize animals dying for their diet, that is where least harm comes in because if more animals suffer and die or less then you go for less.
The last part is not a mental gymnastic, see first point above. Society makes exploitation easy for people and the weaker the person the more likely they will adopt exploitation. Everyone quit being slave owners, that doesn't mean it wasn't optimal (it was very profitable), it was just eventually found to be immoral.
