We need to figure out a way to incorporate the key aspects of culturally relevant pedagogy in an approach that addresses disciplinary skills through the use of UDL principles. Suggestions? Make the material relevant. Access students' funds of knowledge to drive instruction that is relevant to our students. (Moll et al. 1992); And what about the product? Are we still going to ask students to crank out the same, meaningless writing tasks? That's not going to cut it! NO! It's all about student voice! We need authentic writing. We have to move "beyond writing for test or for school-sanctioned practices". (Haddix, 2018); That's right! It's addressing the needs and interests of the students and allowing them to develop their disciplinary skills in meaningful ways. Student Driven! Don't you forget it!
