Novelas are more dramatic and over the top, and focus on relationships or really crazy and obscure plots, and have....I dont want to say graphic, cuz its not, but they do have brief s-x scenes.
Soap opreas focus more on plots like medical and housewife things, and are reasonable, and arent dramatic like telenovelas. Theres also no s-x scene, like...not even a censord one like a novela, just like...a day skip thing, and even then its really obscure and VERY LIGHTLY implied.

Thats an oof. Youre not the only one who thinks that, its a really big misconception, really. The only reason I know all this is cuz I grew up watching and was raised on telenovelas.
