I've often thought about this before as well. It would seem that if we had "more" resources, we would just populate more. There is also that chance that "The government" or equal to on other worlds would be trying to take advantage of this as well, along with big businesses just gobbling up more resources, along with more pollution etc.
More resources wouldn't make things better, but, wiping out half the universe seems a bit obtuse as well. Just let nature take its course. Let the people suffer and mother nature choke... Soon, this planet, like all the others in our solar system will be barren of intelligent life one day.
