philosophes (French for "philosophers") were the intellectuals of the 18th-century Enlightenment
So either:
It's a typo, and was supposed to be "philosophers"
It's French, referring to long dead intellectuals (and no other French words were used)
or it's inappropriately pluralized
It's sad when someone tries to justify a mistake by any means necessary
