If Reach was simply meant to be a dumb fun game for gameplay's sake with no say in the Halo storyline like Spartan Strike, then no one would have a problem with it. But that's not the case. The writers at Bungie who didn't fully understand the Universe which had already been created by their colleagues (particularly Eric Nylund) made it as a very serious story, an addition to a sci fi universe which took itself very seriously, and the very send off with which Bungie would leave the series for the fans. It wasn't meant to be a harmless side story since it confused the existing canon irreparably, and it has bent the Halo timeline to its will ever since, with 343 making feeble attempts to reconcile two irreconcilable orders of events and make them exist together now.
