Leibniz in 1684 published his theory on calculus three years before Newton came around to doing so, but Newton's calculus theories contained flaws like a lack of a standard notation and were only kept by British universities for the sake of national pride. Europe kept Leibniz's methods into the 18th century, but Newton got sole credit due to the fact that he had the British Royal Society to back him.
